Quote - Rumors of War

"When the Prophet sealed Sister Smith and me, he commanded me to kiss the bride. And I always do exactly what the prophet tells me. I keep that commandment as often as I can. Some day, you young men should do the same."

~Elder Joseph Fielding Smith to a group of missionaries.

Bonus quote: (this so reminds me of Ryan)

"He ate the way he did everything else: as if it was a job that had to be done and he had better go at it hard until it was finished."

~Alex speaking of his father in Rumors of War by Dean Hughes

Rumors of War

"Every era has its own refiner's fire, and World War II put general Church membership and Utah to a test," Dean Hughes explains. In Children of the Promise, his first historical fiction series for adults, Dean shows through the eyes of the Thomas family how LDS families were tested to the limit.

"Most people agree it was a fascinating time in world and American history. In fact, there is a charm and nostalgia about that dramatic period," says the author. Dean weaves in those aspects among the conflict in the series. The first volume, Rumors of War opens in 1938 with Elder Alex Thomas and his companion serving in Germany. It soon becomes obvious that he will never complete his mission. War is coming, and that will affect not only Elder Thomas but also his family back home in Salt Lake City. (goodreads.com)

I loved it! I sadly know so little about the details surrounding WWII. And of course I never considered the implications it had on the missionaries who served in these places and had to quickly leave because of the coming war. Nor what it would mean to have to go and fight the people you were serving before. I learned so much but also felt so much for this family in this time of great change. I'd suggest it to anyone who like historic fiction, even if not LDS, you still would get the feel of the change of lives.
